Warm and Wet

The journal Nature Climate Change published a study this week that says (reiterates) as global temperatures rise, more extreme rain events—downpours, flooding— are likely.

The study, using data collected from 11,000 weather stations across the world between 1951 and 2010, found a strong link between global warming and increased rainfall and suggested that extreme participation will occur in both wet and dry regions.

In dry areas where the infrastructure isn’t suited to receive intense and frequent rainfall, flooding could be devastating.

Scientists behind the study hope it will encourage governments to invest more responsibly in infrastructure able to withstand such extreme rain events.
