Renovations on the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk have become a point of great contention.
Last summer the city began replacing broken wooden boards with concrete strips. The change from wood to concrete is being done in part to spare tropical trees like ipe from being harvested in the Amazon Rain Forest, but is being met with opposition.
Many see the beach and boardwalk as an escape from the fast-paced, concrete encased lives they live. To replace the wood with concrete would eliminate this escape and rob boardwalks of their nostalgia.
Hardwood from other species of trees has been considered as an alternative to ipe and concrete but is more costly than concrete and not as long-lasting.
