Trees of Life

Gettysburg, tree planting, Journey Through Hallowed Ground

From the Hanover Evening Sun—The Living Legacy Tree Planting Program is hoping to plant a tree in honor of every soldier who lost their life in the Civil War.

The 620,000 trees will be planted along the 180 miles of roads from Gettysburg to Monticello thanks in part to a $300,000 grant from Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board.

Cate Magennis Wyatt, president of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership noted the challenges of planting along such a significant stretch of highway: “How do you plant trees so the visitor passing by knows that it’s a life?  How do you ensure the trees are planted so they can survive?”

Magennis estimates the cost per tree to be about $100, for a total of $62 million.  People from all over the nation are making donations in honor of their deceased loved ones.  The partnership hopes to complete the plantings by 2015.
