Toomer’s Tree Hug

The Associate Press reports that thousands gathered today at Auburn University’s Toomer’s Corner to mourn oak trees poisoned by rival Alabama fan, Harvey Updyke Jr.

Updyke has been charged with first-degree criminal mischief for allegedly poisoning the 130 year old oaks with a lethal dose of an herbicide after the Tide’s loss to Auburn in November.

For years Auburn students and fans have gathered beneath the Toomer’s tress to celebrate their team.  With the trees’ demise, Auburn will lose one it’s most cherished traditions.  Former athletic director David Housel said the Toomer’s trees are as important to the people of Auburn as Times Square is to New Yorkers.

The act is being condemned by even the most ardent Alabama fan.  Sean Phillips, a student and Roll Tide supporter, called Updyke’s actions “crazy” and noted that despite the storied rivalry, “we’re all from Alabama.  We’re all in this together.”
