Sustainable Faith

A man from Mejorada del Campo, Spain has dedicated nearly a half-century to constructing a cathedral.

Justo Gallego Martinez, or Don Justo, has devoted his life to constructing a church from donated and salvaged materials like bricks, metals, and even paint buckets.  His style is said to be influenced by St. Peter’s Cathedral, churches, castles, and the White House.

Justo left his life as a farmer to study as a Benedictine Monk, but was forced to leave monastery when struck with tuberculosis. During his illness, Justo prayed to the (Our) Lady of The Pillar and promised to erect a church if he should survive.

The cathedral was erected without permits, though Justo has enlisted an engineer to make sure that the completed structure is made safe and legal for worship.
