Undeterred by the snow, Philadelphia civics and dedicated members of the community participated in a city-wide Christmas tree recycling program on Saturday.
The Queen Village Neighborhood Association(QVNA) organized a local drop-off point at Weccacoe Park where members of the Association and volunteers—including greenlimbs—collected a total of 74 trees (a total of 440 trees were collected at Columbus Square). Residents brought trees by foot, bike, car, and in one case, sled to the park where they would be loaded into the bed of a truck and delivered to Columbus Square Park for chipping by Bartlett Tree Experts.
Emissions calculations and final numbers will be posted in the coming days, but by our (rough) calculations, the Zip Car truck that transported the 74 trees from Weccacoe to Columbus Square in just seven (round) trips, spared the atmosphere nearly 175 miles of driving.
