Elon Musk announced last week the creation of rooftop shingles designed to act like solar panels.
The shingles, made by SolarCity—which is merging with Tesla—closely resemble the traditional shingle and were designed to make rooftop solar ascetically-pleasing in the same way Musk’s Tesla cars made electric vehicles.
Said Musk at the press conference, “just like with electric cars, which didn’t look good, had low range and didn’t have good performance…something similar needs to happen to solar. We need to make solar panels as appealing as electric cars have become.”
The presentation included four houses fit with different styles of glass shingles made of layered photovoltaic cells: Tuscan (terra cotta), smooth, textured and slate.
Musk did not discuss cost of availability.
