Coke or Pepsi? Despite your taste preferences, your inner environmentalists will now likely say Pepsi.
PepsiCo Inc. on Tuesday revealed its new bottle made entirely of plant material. Made from switch grass, pine bark, corn husks and other natural materials, the bottle is said to reduce the carbon footprint of the consumer. (The brand ultimately hopes to use food leftovers like orange peels and potato peels to make bottles.)
Rocco Papalia, senior vice president of advanced research, says consumers won’t notice any change from the current bottles which are made from PET plastic. PET plastic is made from fossil fuels and used because it’s lightweight and shatter-resistant. It is not biodegradable or compostable and contributes significantly to the amount of waste we generate.
This entirely plant-based bottle bests Coca-Cola’s model which uses 30% plant-based material. PepsiCo will begin testing their new bottle in 2012 and convert all its products once the bottles are deemed successful.
