The Philadelphia City Planning Commission has adopted the Philadelphia Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan.  The Plan, as stated on the site, was implemented to “identify strategies to increase the number and frequency of people walking and bicycling in the City by improving connectivity, safety, convenience, and attractiveness of Philadelphia’s pedestrian and bicycle networks.”  Simply put, the plan was designed to give biker’s convenient and safe means of transportation through the city.

As part of Phase 1, bike lanes were installed on Spruce, Pine, and Berks Streets.  The first phase will also include bikeways on 13th and 15th Streets and a series of connecting routes between Spruce/Pine and the South Street Bridge.

Phase 2 will continue through 2012 with Phase 3 to follow, which is great news for the Philadelphia cycling community and those of the sustainable mindset.

Want to know what else is happening in the world of urban bicycling?  Well, in NYC, tension between automobile drivers and bikers has reached a head while the commissioner of the Department of Transportation, Janette Sadik-Khan, continues to transform the very nature of commuting in the city.
