Philly Compost’s Schuylkill Center Plans On Hold

WHYY’s newsworks.org reports that Philly Compost’s plans to base an operation out of the Schuylkill Center in Roxborough are on hold due to insufficient funds.

Capital, it seems, may not be the group’s only problem.  The group faces opposition from neighborhood groups like Toad Detour and East 33 who believe the facility’s impact on wildlife may be negative.  Speaking on behalf of East 33, Christina Kobland said that to “rip up wildlife habitat and build a composting facility, which comes with its own environmental problems” sets a “bad example.”  The group is not opposed to composting, but objects to the Schuylkill Center location.

Lee Meinicke, president of Philly Compost, insists that current delays are strictly based on monetary concerns and not opposition from neighbors. She is optimistic about raising capital in the future.
