North-South Bike Lanes Coming in June

Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities Rina Cutler, Philly bike lanes, Philadelphia bike lanes

The city of Philadelphia plans to announce today that two new north-south bike lanes will be painted on 10th & 13th Streets in late June.

Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities Rina Cutler told WHYY’s Newsworks that in the first ten minutes she spent today on the corner of 13th & Spruce where the northbound lanes will be painted, she saw more bicycles than cars.  Cutler said, “We believe we have the capacity to handle the current traffic in one lane versus the current two lanes that exist. It connected really well from South Philadelphia to North Philadelphia and it is a pretty large commuter route in the morning.”

The lanes will be temporary for six months after which Cutler will review travel statistics and determine if they should be made permanent.  Cutler also noted that bikers, pedestrians, and drivers should expect more enforcement of transportation laws.
