Mayor Nutter, Philadelphia Water Commissioner Howard Keukrug, Philadelphia Deputy Mayor for Transportation Rina Cutler and EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson are in Rio de Janeiro this week to discuss green development.
Nutter, who has been praised nationally as a leader in urban sustainability based on his Greenworks plan, is the only elected official on the trip. The Water Department secured an invitation based on plans to implement green roofs, porous pavement and rain gardens as way to enhance and improve drainage.
The team will meet with officials in Brazil to discuss infrastructure improvements and sewer projects leading up to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics which are both being held in the nation.
