Some large “critters” are now calling South Street home.

The Big Belly solar trash and recycling receptacles on South Street from 2nd to 10th Streets have been transformed into works of art known as “litter critters.” The receptacles were wrapped in brightly colored vinyl graphics designed by teachers and students in the Philadelphia Mural Arts’ Big Picture educational program.

The Big Picture program was created to encourage social responsiblity in youth ages 10-14.  Participants work with professional artists in a four session program that teaches everything from the foundations of art to how to create large-scale outdoor murals. They receive a modest stipend and job training and have the opportunity to exhibit their work at the end of each session for feedback from family and the community.
