It’s Getting Windy in England

Thanet wind farm, English wind far, world's largest wind farm

The week the British government continued to prove their commitment to renewable energy by opening the world’s largest wind farm off the southeast coast of England.

The Thanet farm is the size of 400 football fields and made up of 100 turbines.  The turbines, made by Vattenfall of Sweden, are expected to produce enough electricity to power 200,000 homes each year.

Britain currently gets just 3 percent of its energy from renewable sources and is ranked 25th out of 27 European countries utilizing renewable energy.  The nation hopes to increase this to 15 percent by 2020.

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne believes that to achieve the 2020 goals the island nation “should be harnessing our wind, wave and tidal resources to the maximum.”

Despite this progress, Friends of the Earth are calling upon British government to guarantee funding of $3.1 billion per year to encourage investment in sustainable technologies.
