Your nighttime routine might go something like this: turn off the TV, turn off the lights, brush your teeth and go to bed clear headed and powered down. Unfortunately for most consumers, turning off the TV is not actually powering it down.
The commonly used HD TV and cable box pairing in most homes uses more power than a new fridge and while may be adding up to $50 to your energy bill while in the “off” position.
Despite what most homeowners think simply pushing “off” on your remote doesn’t actually stop the flow of energy it means that the device is in standby mode. The only way to stop the flow completely is to unplug devices (which may delete your programming and subject you to a considerable amount of re-boot time when you next turn the TV on).
In addition to our TV’s, cell phone chargers, clocks and other items with those little red lights are burning the midnight oil. It’s costing you money and guzzling electricity. So what can be done? Get the whole story from Sandy Bauers of the Inquirer.
