The Alliance for Biking and Walking has published its third biannual report on the state of walking and biking in the US. The report provides data on who is walking and biking in the nation’s 51 largest cities and is used to shape policy.
The report shows mostly good news for Philadelphia:
- Philly boasts the eighth highest rate of citizens who bike or walk to work (1.6 percent bikers, 8.4 pedestrians)
- Of the top ten largest cities in the nation, we have the largest percentage of bicycle commuters
- Our city has the third highest concentration of bike lanes per square mile
- Thanks to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, our bike programs are widely publicized which has led to increased ridership and safety
- We have the ninth lowest rate of bicycle and pedestrian fatalities
On the downside, we still tend to cater to motorists when it comes to law enforcement. We’re one of just eight cities that do not fine drivers for failing to yield to bikers and pedestrians.
