Goooooo Green!

With Republicans dominating the House and budget cuts forcing many municipalities to re-evaluate their commitment to sustainability, one senior scientist is looking to sports as a way of rallying public support for conservation.

Allen Hershkowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council believes our national pastimes might be the perfect venues for taking the message of conservation to the public.

Hershkowitz and several organizations already working to “green” their teams met on Monday to create the Green Sports Alliance.  The Alliance will work with commissioners of Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NHL, the NBA, the WNBA, and Major League Soccer to limit energy usage and divert waste.

The Green Sports Alliance was born from the collaborative efforts of Hershkowitz and Paul G. Allen, who has used his Microsoft billions to stake claim to the Seattle Seahawks, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Seattle Sounders FC soccer team.  The duo believes teams can create environmental awareness and encourage conservation by setting examples for their avid fans.
