Rina Cutler, deputy mayor for transportation, said Tuesday that two north-south bike lanes are being considered for Center City Philadelphia.
The pilot lanes are going to be announced in April and will run one block apart from Spring Garden to South Street. Though no other specifics about the location of lanes was given, it is expected they will be modeled after the east-west lanes added to Pine and Spruce in 2009 (a car lane was removed making a 6’ bike lane).
Alex Doty executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia has already spoken with the city and expects the new lanes will work well. The community will be able to add to the conversation in future meetings.
Cutler also mentioned that these new lanes will come with plans to curb reckless bike and vehicle driving and pedestrians who are crossing while distracted (i.e. texting).
The additional lanes will help Philadelphia become more bike-friendly, reduce congestion and emissions and promote healthy living.
